Are down jackets waterproof?

Understanding down jackets

Whilst some down jackets have a waterproof/breathable outer fabric, most are not completely waterproof. When they get wet, they losethe down jacketstheir insulating properties. But don’t worry; modern technology offers solutions.

The science behind down insulation Down feathers, plucked from ducks or geese, form the soft, insulating layer in your jacket. The feathers trap air and provide warmth. However, when they become soaked, the down clumps together and becomes ineffective. The jacket’s outer fabric plays a crucial role in keeping moisture out. Some jackets have a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating, which repels light rain. However, this coating wears off over time, particularly with frequent use and washing.

The role of baffles and seams The baffles – the quilted compartments that hold the down in place – also play a part in the water resistance. Through-stitched baffles, where the stitching goes through both layers of fabric, create potential weak points. Water can seep through these seams. On the other hand, box baffles – where the stitching only connects the inner and outer layers at specific points – minimise this risk. Look out for jackets with well-designed baffles to improve waterproofing.

How to waterproof a down jacket

The quick fix – a water-repellent wash or spray

The quickest way is to use a special waterproofing wash or spray. This not only improves the jacket’s external water resistance, but also protects the lining and the down filling. Follow our step-by-step guide to achieve the best result.

Choose the right product. Look for a wash or spray that is specially designed for down garments. Nikwax Down Wash Direct is a popular choice. Before applying it, make sure that yourjacketis clean. Use a mild detergent to wash away dirt and oil. Then follow the instructions on the product. Some require machine washing, whilst others recommend hand washing. In any case, make sure the jacket is thoroughly damp before applying the solution.

Application and drying: Apply the wash or spray evenly, paying particular attention to seams, cuffs and zips. Allow the product to soak into the fabric. Rinse thoroughly if necessary. Then dry your jacket. Tumble drying on a low heat setting is effective, but air drying works too. Once the jacket is dry, fluff up the down by gently shaking it. Voilà! Your down jacket is now better equipped to cope with unexpected rain showers.

Preparation for waterproofing

Washing your down jacket

Before waterproofing your jacket, give it a good wash. Zip it up, close all the pockets and fastenings, and use warm water in the washing machine. Avoid hot or heavy-duty cycles. Once it’s clean, you’re ready to improve its water-repellent properties.

The importance of cleanliness A clean jacket ensures better waterproofing results. Dirt, oils and residues can hinder the effectiveness of any waterproofing treatment. Use a gentle detergent and avoid fabric conditioner – it can clump the down. Choose a front-loading washing machine to avoid agitating the down too much.

Drying the jacket: After washing, gently squeeze out any excess water. Lay the jacket flat on a clean surface or hang it up. Avoid twisting or wringing it, as this may damage the baffles. Leave it to air dry thoroughly. Once it is dry, fluff up the down by gently shaking the jacket. You’re now ready for the next step!

Nikwax Down Proof: A game-changer

Long-lasting waterproofing

Apply Nikwax Down Proof at regular intervals – it revives the outer fabric’s DWR (Durable Water Repellent) and makes the down itself water-repellent. Apply an extra coat of Down Proof before drying.

Nikwax Down Proof is a specialised treatment designed for down garments. It not only restores the DWR finish on the outer fabric, but also penetrates the down to make it water-repellent. Follow the instructions on the product carefully. You will probably need to apply it either in a washing machine or by hand.

Drying and fluffing After applying Nikwax Down Proof, allow your jacket to dry completely. Tumble-drying on a low heat setting is effective, but air-drying works too. Once the jacket is dry, fluff up the down by gently shaking it. With this long-term solution, your down jacket will stay cosy and dry season after season.
